GENERAL JAMMAN QUESTIONS
All JAMMAN Entries:
Will the Roland FS-5U work with the JAMMAN?

The Roland FS-5U is a single momentary footswitch with a mono connection. You could use one for Tap and one for Select as long as your JAMMAN has V1.1 software in it.

You could also use two Roland FS-5U pedals and a 2 X 1/4" mono in to 1 X 1/4" stereo out to duplicate the function of our DFS. This will work with either version of the JAMMAN (1.00 and 1.10.)

What type of MIDI pedal works with it?

Any pedal that can send MIDI program change messages 1-20 and can send out redundant messages.

What MIDI information is output from Lexicon's JamMan?

The MIDI output from JamMan is really fairly simple: when you press RESET, a "SYSTEM REAL TIME" STOP message (FC hex) is output. When you then press TAP (for the first time after RESET) a second STOP message is output (in case the slave system was manually put in PLAY). When you press TAP a second time, a "SYSTEM REAL TIME" START message (FA hex) is output. The system is always outputting MIDI CLOCK but at a default rate on power up and the last TAPed in tempo thereafter.

JamMan, by itself, does NOT output any "all notes off" messages. However, it DOES pass all MIDI data present at it's input through to it's output (soft thru) with the exception of incoming MIDI clock which is blocked. Although the MIDI spec doesn't recommend doing this, we found it really useful when driving more than one JamMan from a MIDI foot controller or sequencer.

It should be pointed out that the tempo of the MIDI clock generated by JamMan changes IMMEDIATELY after the TAP button is pressed the second time. Problems have been encountered with some sequencers due to this. Cakewalk® version 3.00 for Windows would start then stop immediately after the second TAP. TwelveTone fixed the problem in maintainance release V3.01 but other sequencers may encounter the same problem. From JamMan's perspective, there is not much that can be done; It is not known what the tempo is until you press the TAP button a second time. At that point you need the clock immediately.

Also note that JamMan auto-detects incoming MIDI clock and attempts to create its loop based on the tempo of that clock. This is indicated by a flickering TEMPO LED when JamMan is in the RESET mode. When incoming MIDI clock is detected, only a single press of the TAP button is required. The loop size is automatically calculated based on the tempo of the incoming MIDI clock and the number of beats selected on the front panel.

What is the JAMMAN?

The JAMMAN is a digital delay device which provides up to 8 seconds of delay or sampling and allows you tor create loops of up to 8 seconds in length. The JAMMAN has been discontinued and is no longer available for new purchase. However there is a Jamman feature available in the MPX G2.

Is the same type of footswitch used in both footswitch jacks on the JAMMAN?

Yes.

How do I set up a Cakewalk® ini file for the Lexicon JamMan?

The following is an excerpt from a Cakewalk® "master.ini" file which lists the function assigned to each MIDI program change message in each of the modes for the JamMan.

If you use Cakewalk® you can add these directly to the "master.ini" file. If you select one of the JamMan assignments under "Settings Instruments" the events (program changes) will be listed with the function they perform.

How do I set the MIDI channel on the Jamman?
  1. Power up the system while holding the RESET/BYPASS and FUNCTION button. A "d" should appear on the display.
  2. Press RESET/BYPASS, then turn the Mode knob until "15" is displayed.
  3. Press RESET/BYPASS. The display will show "1" (the default MIDI channel). Turn the SELECT knob until your desired MIDI channel is displayed (0 = off).
  4. Press RESET/BYPASS, then turn the Mode knob until "9" is displayed. Press RESET/BYPASS to assume normal operation with the new MIDI channel assignment.
(The RESET/BYPASS button is used as a sort of

Please note that JamMan does not contain any non-volatile memory so the MIDI channel assignment is lost every time the system is power cycled.

Does the JAMMAN have an on board sinewave generator?

Although it is not a marketed feature of the Lexicon Jamman and Reflex, both of these products are capable of generating a low distortion sinewave at 440Hz and 1kHz. The sinewave generator was included in the diagnostics for these systems as a troubleshooting aid but, as I recently found out, doubles very nicely as a stand alone oscillator. I've been using my Reflex as a bench oscillator for testing equipment but the generator can just as easily be used as a tuning reference (440Hz) for musical instruments.

The Reflex I tested while writing this app note produced an output at 440.4Hz with a distortion level of 0.03% at about 8dBu and an output of 977Hz with a distortion level of 0.014% at about 8dBu. You can expect very similar performance as the frequency is crystal driven and converter performace is very consistent. Please note, however, that the performance of the oscillator is not spec'd by Lexicon so what you get is what you get. Also note that the MIX should be set for full WET and the OUTPUT should be full clockwise (or set to taste).

Please note, however, that the performance of the oscillator is not spec'd by Lexicon so what you get is what you get. Also note that the MIX should be set for full WET and the OUTPUT should be full clockwise (or set to taste).

To run the generator on Jamman:

  1. Press and hold the RESET/BYPASS and FUNCTION buttons on power up until the letter 'd' appears in the display.
  2. Release both buttons.
  3. Press the RESET/BYPASS button. The display will now show a number between 0 and 15.
  4. Turn the right hand encoder (MODE SELECT) until the number 13 appears.
  5. Press RESET/BYPASS and release both. The number 4 will appear in the display indicating that 440Hz mode is selected.
  6. Turn the right hand encoder to the 12:00 position to select 1kHz (1 displayed) or leave it alone for 440Hz (all other positions select 440Hz).
  7. Press the RESET/BYPASS button to enter the selection. The letter r appears on the display indicating that the generator is "running".
  8. Press any key to exit the generator.
  9. Turn the encoder to display the number 9 and press RESET/BYPASS to exit the diagnostics and run the normal operating system.

It's a little crude (actually very crude) but what the hey. If you need a 440 or 1KHz sinewave in a pinch, it's there.

If you are troubleshooting either of these products, you can run the generator to determine if audio problems are in the input section (AD converter, etc..) or output section (the DA converter, etc..).

Does Lexicon offer a product that does what the JAMMAN does?

Some features of the JAMMAN or in our new G2 guitar effects box. 20 second loops syncronized to external midi clock or internal clock. Clear, layer, replace, delay and mute can be controlled via footswitches or via MIDI.

The MPX1 allows you to create one loop of up to 2 seconds in length. The PCM80 will allow you to use up to 6 voices of delay which can be upgraded to more than 40 seconds long and can be regenerated.

Do any other companies make anything that does the same thing as the JAMMAN?

If you can not locate a used JAMMAN, try looking for the Oberheim Digital Echoplex, the Boomerang Music Boomerang, or the Repeater by Electrix.

Are the footswitches that Lexicon provides the only ones which will work with the JAMMAN?

No, You can use any pair of mono momentary footswitches connected via a y-connector.

Do you still make the Jamman?

The Jamman is no longer manufactured. There is a 20 second JAMMAN feature included within our MPX G2.

When I plug a pair of headphones into the "phones" output jack, I only get sound in one ear... (the headphones work fine too).

Try pulling the headphone plug slightly to half way out of the JAMMAN jack.

Unable to sync drum machine via MIDI to JAMMAN.

If using the JAMMAN as the midi clock master: Set drum machine midi clock input to "on". Verify that a MIDI cable is connecting the JAMMAN MIDI OUTPUT to the drum machines MIDI INPUT. If using the DRUM MACHINE as the midi clock master: Set drum machine MIDI CLOCK OUTPUT to "on". Verfiy that a MIDI cable is connecting the drum machine midi output to the JAMMAN midi input.

JAMMAN does not pass audio after a loop is recorded.

Go direct from sound source to the JAMMAN and to an amplifier. If it still is not passing audio from the JAMMAN it should be returned for repair. In the US, contact your dealer or Lexicon Customer Service. Out of the US, contact your local Lexicon dealer or distributor.

I would like to delay samples playback intervuls to longer than 32 seconds.

The software of the JAMMAN will not support more than 32 seconds of delay memory. Oberheim(owned by Gibson) makes a product called the Digital Echoplex which can be upgraded well beyond 32 Seconds.
