Can you run two LARCs off of one cable?

No, but you can use the two different LARC ports (and two cables) in order to use two LARCs.

Can you use AES/EBU and SDIF-2 at the same time?

No.

I can't get a straight delay after upgrading to V4 of M480L.

The delay programs for V4 are in Bank 6.

I can't switch between machines.

Press the button labeled CTRL and move the slider labeled CFG to something other than SINGLE.

Do you have individual Mix control for each machine?

Yes.

Does the Version 3 software for the M480L have SYSEX capabilities?

No, SYSEX was not included in the M480L until the release of V4.

How do I change the M480L main frame to 220VAC?

NOTE: The following information is intended for use by a qualified service technician only.

Voltage changeover is a fast and easy process:

  1. Remove the power cable from the 480L.
  2. Insert a small flat-bladed screwdriver or an IC puller into the slot next to the fuseholder cartridge, which is located just to the right of the power connector. Pry the cartridge out so that it drops out of the chassis. Set the fuseholder cartridge aside.
  3. The voltage changeover board is mounted vertically in a small compartment which is normally covered by the fuseholder cartridge (which you removed in step 2). Remove the board with a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers.
  4. The four sides of the board are marked with the four voltages at which the 480L can be operated (100, 120, 200, 240). Slide the voltage changeover pin around until it fits in the notch opposite the side marked with the operating voltage you require.
  5. With the pin facing out, replace the board in the chassis. Press it until it snaps into place or fits firmly in its socket.
  6. The fuseholder cartridge is supplied with two sets of fuses—a single 3 A, 3AG Slo-blo fuse for 100/120 V, and two 1.5 A 20-mm Slo-blo fuses for 220/240 V. To change the fuses over to 220/240 V, remove the small Phillips-head screw on the cartridge, and turn over the board. Reinstall the screw. The European 20-mm fuses should now be visible. Reverse the process to change from 220/240 V to 100/120 V operation.
  7. Reinstall the fuseholder cartridge. Check the pin indicator to verify that you selected the correct voltage. If none of the holes in the fuseholder line up with the pin on the voltage changeover board, you installed the board upside down. Reinstall it correctly and try the fuseholder again.

This completes the voltage changeover.

How do I set up unity gain?

In SINGLE CONFIGURATION load Bank 9 Progam 1, In-Out. Send your peak system level to the M480L. Using the INPUT KNOBs behind the front panel, set the level on the LARC input to -6dB. Using the OUTPUT knobs of the M480L, adjust the output level so that you have the same level returning to your board as you are sending to the M480L. Load the programs that you want to use and you should be running at unity gain.

How much heat is produced by the M480Lmainframe in BTUs?

614.34 BTU/hr MAXIMUM
Formula:
watts -> BTU/hour
watts x 3.413

M480L 180W MAX rated
180 x 3.413 = 614.34 BTU/hr

All specifications are subject to change without notice.

I need the pin out info for digital I/O on the 9-pin D-plug.

Early M480Ls had a single digital connector which conforms with the SDIF-2 format with pinouts as follows:
Pin1-chassis ground
Pin 2-Right Channel Output
Pin 3-Left Channel Input
Pin 4-Word Clock Input
Pin 5-Digital Ground
Pin 6-Word Clock Output
Pin 7-Left Channel Output
Pin 8-Right Channel Input
Pin 9-Digital Ground

Later model M480Ls will also have a 9 pin din labeled AES/EBU which only works when the AES OPTION card is installed and provides AES and SPDIF compatability. This connector has pin outs as follows:
Pin 1-Case
Pin 2-Input+
Pin 3-Input-
Pin 4-Output2+
Pin 5-no connection
Pin 6-GND
Pin 7-Output1-
Pin 8-Output1+
Pin 9-Output2-
Pins 2 and 3 are shielded together off of Pin 6
Pins 7 and 8 are shielded together off of Pin 6
Pins 4 and 9 are shielded together off of Pin 6

Earlier M480Ls require a hardware modification in order to have the AES connector installed.

If you have the in/out connector contact a Lexicon dealer if you would like to purchase the AES option.

If you need the AES connector installed contact Lexicon in the US or your local distributor.

Is there a less expensive version of the M480L without sampling?

No. All M480Ls have sampling. The SME extends the sampling time and is sold as an option only.

Is there sampling in the M480L?

The stock M480L has up to 6 Seconds Mono or 3 Seconds of Stereo sampling. The SME upgrade (USList $2000) allows up to 20 Seconds Mono or 10 Seconds of stereo sampling.

You can not use the SME and AES/EBU options at the same time in either the split or Cascade configurations.

I am looking for a MIX sheet. Where can I find one?

We have not created a MIX sheet for the M480L. You could use the Parameter figures in the program descriptions of the M480L owners manual as a template.

The M480L displays a "Not enough HSPs" message. Why is this?

You will get this message if you try to load either the 3 SEC Stereo or 6 SEC Mono sampling programs (Bank 7 Programs 1&2) when you are using any configuration other than the Single configuration.

You will also get this message when trying to use the Surround Cartridge algorithms in any configuration other than Single.

The M480L does not save the last setting after cycling the power. How do I avoid this?

If you are using V4 software go to CTRL:PAGE 2 and make sure that the slider labled DEF is set to OFF.

There is a level changes when changing size parameter.

This is normal. This is part of how different room sizes are simulated.

My M480L is displaying overload lights and making noise.

Try to isolate the problem to one of the two HSP boards as follows: Place the machine into SINGLE configuration. Power down and open up the front panel. Dislocate (unplug) the board labeled HSP2. Power on and see how the machine works. Whether it is working properly or not power the machine back down. Reinstall the HSP2 board and dislocate (unplug) the HSP1 board. Power the machine on and see how it works. If the problem seems to follow one board and not the other you should then power the machine down and swap the location of the two boards and go through the test again in order to verify that the problem follows a specific board and not the location of the boards.

If you can isolate the problem down to a board it can then be returned for repair (flat rate $200 plus S/H with a 2 week turnaround time) or we can swap it out with a known good board ($300 plus shipping).

If you can not isolate the problem to a specific program the entire machine should come back for repair ($450 plus S/H without SME, $500 plus S/H with SME and a 2 week turnaround) or swap ($850 plus S/H without SME, $900 plus S/H with SME.)

UPDATE: 07/2003 - Board swap is no longer a repair option. Repair is limited to component level where possible. HOST and HSP boards are no longer available.
What is the pinout on the automation port?

Pin 1 is Chassis Ground
Pin2 is AUSD/
Pin 3 is AURD
Pins 4, 5 and 6 are Ground
